What pope Francis told Buhari and other world leaders



Pope Francis on Thursday urged the world to act
quickly to prevent “extraordinary” climate change from
destroying the planet and said wealthy countries must
bear responsibility for creating the problem and for
solving it. In a radically worded letter addressed to
every person on the planet, the leader of the world’s
1.2 billion Catholics blames human greed for the
critical situation “Our Sister, mother Earth” now finds
itself in.
“This sister now cries out to us because of the harm
we have inflicted on her by our irresponsible use and
abuse of the goods with which God has endowed her,”
he writes in his long-anticipated Encyclical on the
environment.
Arguing that environmental damage is intimately linked
to global inequality, he goes on to say that doomsday
predictions can no longer be dismissed and that: “The
earth, our home, is beginning to look more and more
like an immense pile of filth.”
Green activists hailed the charismatic Argentinian
pontiff’s widely-trailed intervention as a potential game-
changer in the debate over what causes global
warming and how to reverse it. “Everyone, whether
religious or secular, can and must respond to this
clarion call for bold urgent action,”said Kumi Naido, the
International Executive Director of Greenpeace.
Environmentalists hope the pope’s message will
significantly increase the pressure for binding
restrictions on carbon emissions to be agreed at global
talks in Paris at the end of this year. But even before
the official publication, climate change sceptics had
dismissed the document’s argument that the
phenomenon is primarily man-made and that humanity
can reverse it through lifestyle changes including an
early phasing-out of fossil fuels.
“I don’t get economic policy from my bishops or my
cardinal or my pope,” US presidential candidate Jeb
Bush said on the eve of the release in comments that
underlined the depth of opposition in the United States
to a binding agreement to curb greenhouse gases.
– Fast track to disaster –
The Encyclical references the arguments of the
sceptics by acknowledging that volcanic activity,
variation in the earth’s movements and the solar cycle
are factors in climate change. But it maintains that
“most global warming in recent decades is due to the
great concentration of greenhouse gases released
mainly as a result of human activity”.
And
it
leaves no doubt that Francis believes the world is on a
fast-track to disaster after decades of inaction. “If
present trends continue, this century may well witness
extraordinary climate change and an unprecedented
destruction of ecosystems, with serious consequences
for all of us,” he writes.
Bemoaning the “remarkable” weakness of political
responses to this, Francis accuses the sceptics of
cynically ignoring or manipulating the scientific
evidence. “There are too many special interests, and
economic interests easily end up trumping the common
good and manipulating information so that their own
plans will not be affected,” he writes.
“We know how unsustainable is the behaviour of those
who constantly consume and destroy, while others are
not yet able to live in a way worthy of their human
dignity,” he adds, saying the time has come for parts of
the world to accept decreased growth.
– Conflict and war –
The consequences of climate change, he argues, will
include a rise in sea levels that will directly threaten
the quarter of the world’s population that lives near or
on coastlines, and will be felt most acutely by
developing countries. Highlighting warnings that acute
water shortages could arise within decades, he writes
that, “the control of water by large multinational
business may become a major source of conflict in this
century”.
He adds: “It is foreseeable that, once certain resources
have been depleted, the scene will be set for new
wars,” with the ever-present risk that nuclear or
biological weapons could be used. One of the strongest
themes in the encyclical is that rich countries must
accept  responsibility for having caused climate change
and should “help pay this debt” by cutting their carbon
emissions and helping the developing world adopt
sustainable forms of energy generation.
“The land of the southern poor is rich and mostly
unpolluted, yet access to ownership of goods and
resources for meeting vital needs is inhibited by a
system of commercial relations and ownership which is
structurally perverse,” the pope writes in perhaps the
most radical passage of the document.
Francis says fossil fuel-based technology needs to be
“progressively replaced without delay.” Developing
countries will need financial help to do this from
“countries which have experienced great growth at the
cost of the ongoing pollution of the planet” and this
pact has to be enshrined in binding accords.

Buhari rejects U.S gay marriage

President Muhammadu Buhari has told Barrack Obama-
led United States of America that he will not sanction
gay marriage in Nigeria, stating that ‘sodomy is against
the law of the country and abhorrent to our culture’.

The spokesperson of the president, Femi Adesina said
that the issue of gay marriage was discussed during
Buhari meeting in the US but he rejected the offer.

“The issue of gay marriage came up here yesterday.
PMB was point blank. Sodomy is against the law in
Nigeria, and abhorrent to our culture,” he posted on his
Twitter handle.

Recalled that Nigerians have expressed fear that
Obama might pressurized Buhari to sanction gay
marriage in Nigeria in order to get the support of the
United States.

Civil Society Organisations, also urged Buhari not to
listen to the US government on issues of Gay rights, so
as to protect the laws and values of Nigeria.

Al-Qaeda calls for more lone wolf attacks in US, France and others


Washington – Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula
(AQAP) on Wednesday released a video calling for lone
wolf attacks in the U.S., France and other `disbeliever’
nations.

A group monitoring the jihadists’ activities, SITE
Intelligence, said in Washington that the video praised
the alleged gunman in an attack in July.
The attack which took place in the southern state of
Tennessee, killed four U.S. Marines and one Navy
sailor.

The SITE Intelligence quoted AQAP official, Khalid-bin
Batarfi, who spoke in the nine-minute video, as
condemning America, France and other `disbeliever’
nations.

It said Batarfi was freed in April from a Yemeni prison.
“As you put limits to freedom of expression and punish
whoever goes against them, it is upon us to punish
whoever transgresses our boundaries and sanctities’”,
the terrorist was quoted as saying.

A vaccine against Ebola said to render 100% protection

A vaccine against the deadly Ebola virus has led to
100% protection and could transform the way Ebola is
tackled, preliminary results suggest.
There were no proven drugs or vaccines against the
virus at the start of the largest outbreak of Ebola in
history, which began in Guinea in December 2013.
The World Health Organization (WHO) said the findings,
being published in the Lancet, could be a "game-
changer".
Experts said the results were "remarkable".
This trial centred on the VSV-EBOV vaccine, which was
started by the Public Health Agency of Canada and
then developed by the pharmaceutical company Merck.
It combined a fragment of the Ebola virus with another
safer virus in order to train the immune system to beat
Ebola.
A unique clinical trial took place in Guinea. When a
patient was discovered, their friends, neighbours and
family were vaccinated to create a "protective ring" of
immunity.
Analysis
This could be the breakthrough the world has been
waiting for.
There is caution as the results are still preliminary,
with more data coming in.
But officials at the WHO believe the effectiveness of
the vaccine will end up being between 75% and 100%.
If such a vaccine was available 18 months ago then
thousands of lives could have been saved.
There are still other vaccines being trialled - notably
from GSK and Johnson&Johnson - although as the
number of cases continues to fall it is becoming
increasingly difficult to prove how effective they are.
Ebola will inevitably come again.
The hope now is that the legacy of this unprecedented
outbreak will be a vaccine that means a tragedy of this
scale can never be repeated.
One hundred patients were identified in the trial
between April and July and then close contacts were
either vaccinated immediately, or three weeks later.
In the 2,014 close contacts who were vaccinated
immediately there were no subsequent cases of Ebola.
In those vaccinated later there were 16 cases,
according to the results published in the Lancet
medical journal.
'Promising'
The WHO says it is so far 100% effective, although that
figure may change as more data is collected.
Close contacts of Ebola patients in Guinea will now be
vaccinated immediately. And since the vaccine has
been shown to be safe, that process will also be
extended to include children.
Médecins sans Frontières (MSF) is involved with this
research, and is part of a parallel trial for frontline
healthcare workers.
Medical director Bertrand Draguez said the Lancet
results should spur instant action.
"With such high efficacy, all affected countries should
immediately start and multiply ring vaccinations to
break chains of transmission and vaccinate all frontline
workers to protect them."
Marie-Paule Kieny, an assistant director general at the
WHO told BBC News: "It is certainly promising. We
have seen that where rings have been vaccinated, the
transmission has stopped.
"Prior to vaccination there were cases, cases, cases.
The vaccine arrives and 10 days later the cases are
flat.
"It could be a game-changer because previously there
was nothing, despite the disease being identified 40
years ago.
"When there is a new outbreak this vaccine will be put
to use to stop the outbreak as soon as possible to not
have the terrible disaster we have now."
More than 11,000 people have died from Ebola and
nearly 28,000 have been infected.
The sheer scale of the 2014-15 outbreak led to an
unprecedented push on vaccines - and a decade's work
has been condensed into around 10 months.
The number of cases has fallen - and in the week up to
July 26th 2015 there were just four cases in Guinea
and three in Sierra Leone.
Prof John Edmunds, from the London School of
Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, helped design the trial:
"The development has been at an absolutely
unprecedented speed.
"This is very good news, these are very significant
results, the epidemic is not over and this shows we
have another potential weapon.
"The trial is still continuing, these are interim results
which need confirming, but there's now light at the end of the tunnel.
